Abstract Primary school English teaching is focused on stimulating and cultivating students’ interest in learning English. Using the stick figure can arouse their attention and stimulate their interest with its vivid and intuitive features. Through the document literature and a number of examples, the author of this paper analyzes the situation of current English teaching, expounds on the role and application of the stick figure in primary school English teaching and makes a more detailed exposition on its use. The stick figure in English teaching is one of the effective aids suitable for the development of children’s physiological and psychological characteristics and can cultivate their interest and develop their learning desire, thus playing an important role in education and teaching practice. Therefore, using the stick figure is of great significance in the primary school English teaching.

I. Introduction

The stick figure is regarded as the teaching aid, which takes advantage of point, line facet and symbol language to represent character of object of a concise, summary, and vivid painting. The stick figure was first created by English teaching expert Dr.I.A Richards and Mrs.C.Gibson. Richards puts forward sentence method in his book “in the English teaching each sentence expresses a scene, and it can be shown by pictures or character’s actions clearly (Li 258-260).” He advocates using the stick figure in the English teaching. He and Golden and Gibson co-wrote English Through Pictures, and the book has become a model for the stick figure applied in English teaching (Luo 38).
As we all know, there are many English teaching methods in our English course, such as games, multimedia. Besides these, the stick figure is fairly important in English teaching. It is a convenient and simple way to understand the abstract. The beginning of all the knowledge is sensory perception. The prominent features of the memory in pupils are imaginable and unconscious, and the stick figure is exactly based on the children of this feature, for the teaching provides an active role. Its advantage is that it is can be drawn at any time and anywhere, and it is more simple, more convenient, more flexible, more dynamic and generative. Many pedagogic scholars always emphasize that interest is very important in English and it is a good teacher for pupils to learn a foreign language. In order to arouse students’ attention, teachers should have to try to make their lessons interesting through all potential techniques. The stick figure is one of the useful methods that makes students interested in English lessons. In order to enhance students’ communicative competence, teachers are expected to change the abstract material into vivid and easily acceptable visual scene. Therefore, the stick figure is widely used in classroom teaching, and it is a frequent and effective teaching method when teachers instruct knowledge and transfer information.
