摘 要銜接是構成語篇必不可少的條件。自從韓禮德和哈桑于1976年出版了《英語的銜接》一書,越來越多的國內外學者開始專注于對銜接手段的研究。本論文以韓理徳和哈桑的語篇銜接理論為基礎,以《霧都孤兒》中大量的語篇銜接手段實例為出發點,采用描寫與解釋相結合的方法,系統的討論了英漢語篇銜接手段的異同點。英語中存在更多的人稱照應、替代以及除原詞復現之外的重復,而省略和原詞復現則頻繁出現在漢語中。本文的對比分析可以讓譯者對英漢語言特征有更加透徹的理解,從而產生更好的譯本。34541

Abstract
Cohesion is a crucial element in building up a text. Since the publication of the book Cohesion in English compiled by Halliday and Hasan in 1976, more and more scholars from home and abroad have focused on the study of cohesive devices. Based on Halliday and Hasan’s cohesion theory and by starting from the abundant examples of cohesive devices in Oliver Twist, this thesis adopts the method of description and explanation, which explores the similarities and differences between English and Chinese systematically. Generally speaking, personal reference, substitution and reiteration other than repetition are used more frequently in English, while ellipsis and repetition often occur in Chinese. By analyzing the similarities and differences of cohesive devices of these two languages, translators can have a good understanding of language characteristics, which allows them to perform brilliantly in translation practices.

Ⅰ.Introduction
There are no totally identical leaves in the world, so does language. As far as cohesive devices are concerned, there are similarities between English and Chinese, however, they have their own characteristics as well. Therefore, it is crucial to make a contrastive study of these two languages and to discover their similarities and differences in terms of cohesive devices. Many scholars from home and abroad have made contrastive studies, such as Peng (200). In his book he gives a comprehensive comparison between English and Chinese texts from the level of ideational, interpersonal and textual functions and has made great achievements. But there is still sufficient room for us to make further efforts in terms of the study of cohesive devices of these two languages.
    Based on the application of Halliday’s cohesion theory in studying the Comparison between Chinese and English cohesive devices, this research will deepen our comprehension of cohesion of both languages and help people master their differences and similarities clearly. By analyzing the literature work, the author will solve this question: What are the differences and similarities between Chinese and English in view of cohesive devices?

The primary methods of this dissertation are based on the analysis of one well- known English literary work and its Chinese version. The data we have chosen for the case study is Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist and its Chinese version compiled by Rong Rude.
